India is introducing stricter emission standards from April 2023. As a result, 17 cars and SUVs will be phased out in the Indian market.
India's new real-time driving emission (RDE) standards will be introduced from April 1, 2023. Many cars and SUVs from top companies such as Toyota, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Hyundai and others that do not meet the requirements will no longer be on the roads from April 2023.
Real Driving Emissions will measure pollutants such as nitrogen oxides emitted by a car. Once the new standards are implemented, car owners will have to upgrade their engines to reduce emissions.
The engine upgrade will be quite expensive, especially for car owners who own diesel vehicles. This is also one of the reasons why many companies choose to phase out the models.
The new RDE standards require vehicles to be equipped with a built-in self-diagnostic device that determines the emission level in real time. The device takes care of essential parts such as catalytic converters and oxygen sensors to achieve the required value. In addition, cars and SUVs must be equipped with programmed fuel injectors to control fuel consumption.
